Introduction
------------
This file provides information on how to update your copy of BBEdit,
to the current (2.5.6) maintenance release. This updater can be used
to update any revision of BBEdit 2.5: the original 2.5 release, as
well as maintenance versions 2.5.1, 2.5.2, 2.5.3, 2.5.4, and 2.5.5.
• NOTE: Since the updater application modifies your copy of BBEdit,
you should not use it on your original BBEdit distribution disks.
This updater is for use only by owners of the commercial release of
BBEdit. It cannot be used to update a demo, beta, or freeware
version of BBEdit.
Packing List
------- ----
This updater package includes:
- “Read Me First!”: this document;
- “2.5.6 Release Notes”: information on what’s new and
improved in this version, as well as general information
that wasn’t included in the manual.
- “BBEdit 2.5.x->2.5.6 Updater”: the application to update
your copy of BBEdit.
- “Updated Extensions”: a folder which contains updated
versions of some of the standard extensions that ship
with BBEdit.
- “ToolServer Support”: updated versions of the ToolServer
support tools and scripts that ship with BBEdit.
- “BBEdit BBalloons”: an updated version of the file
which contains the help balloons used in BBEdit.
(If you’re running under System 6, you can ignore this
file.)
- “BBEdit 3.0 Press Release”: contains the text of our
press release announcing the features and anticipated
ship date of BBEdit 3.0, which includes Power Macintosh
native support and a whole lot more.
Installing the Update
---------- --- ------
0. Make sure you’re using an unmodified, non-beta, non-demo copy of
BBEdit 2.5. If necessary, make a new copy from your original
distribution disk. If you have installed PopupFuncs, then you’ve
modified your copy, so you’ll need to get a fresh copy of BBEdit
before proceeding, and you’ll need to reinstall PopupFuncs after
you’ve updated BBEdit.
1. Double-click on the “BBEdit 2.5.x->2.5.6 Updater” application.
2. A dialog will come up, asking you to designate the copy of BBEdit
you’d like to update. Select your old copy of BBEdit, and click
the “Update” button.
3. The updater will complete its operation automatically. When it’s
done, it will delete the old version of BBEdit.
4. Drag the contents of the “Updated Extensions” folder into your
BBEdit Extensions folder, if you have one. If you’re not using
any extensions, you can skip this step.
5. If you use BBEdit with ToolServer, remove the old BBEdit tools
and scripts from their places, and replace them with the updated
versions (see your manual for instructions on how to install the
ToolServer support materials).
5. Read the “2.5.6 Release Notes” for information on what’s new and
improved in this maintenance version.
If you have difficulty installing the update, or would like a floppy
disk that contains this updater, contact us for information
or assistance at one of the addresses below.
Thanks for your continued support of BBEdit.
